Designing the Forest of the Unexplained

First playable blockout of the continuous forest districts and learning the terror of dense foliage.

“A horror forest that feels small feels safe. Distance is our first antagonist.”

01 / The Illusion of Scale vs. True Isolation

Our first greybox prototype placed the ranger cabin, the logging camp, and the crime scene clearing within sixty seconds of walking distance. It felt convenient for playtesting, but it completely drained the atmosphere.

When landmarks are too close, players sprint between them. When a dark forest path takes three full minutes of cautious wading through dense fog, every snapped twig feels consequential.

02 / Verticality and Suffocating Canopy

We drew heavy visual inspiration from Pacific Northwest old-growth forests. Ancient eighty-foot Douglas firs, rotting nurse logs, and thick ferns that obscure the ground.

The trees dwarf the player. You are never in control; you are a fragile silhouette moving between monolithic trunks.

Studio Takeaway

In psychological horror, distance creates vulnerability. Giving spaces room to breathe forces players to endure the journey rather than rush to the next objective.
